Owlcove.sg is a free online platform administered in Singapore by the administrators in the owlcove team. All rights to the site are reserved unless otherwise specified.
While we advocate the free sharing of ideas, information and knowledge, we do not tolerate or condone any unlawful and/or inappropriate behaviour on our site.
The below terms and standards govern your access to and the use any service and content on owlcove.sg. By accessing or using these services and content, you agree to be bound by these terms.
These terms are here to protect all of us, so that no one can easily misuse or sabotage the site. In short, you agree not to do anything unlawful or inappropriate on the site, and we agree to protect your interests as best as we can.
Use of the Site
Visitors who are not logged in
By using owlcove you agree to let us anonymously collect information, via analytics, about your actions on the site, such as the pages you visit, the duration you stay and so on, and to use this information in the development of the site.
Users who are logged in
By logging into owlcove, you agree to:
- Provide us with accurate, current and complete information about you if and when it is necessary for the operation of the site
- Be responsible for your own account security and not hold us liable should you lose access to your account or if someone else manages to hijack your account
- Let the owlcove team delete an account if it’s not used for a prolonged period of time
without any prior notice if need be, although we will try our best to inform you as soon as reasonable.
Rules of Conduct
You agree to help us make owlcove a great place for learning and sharing by following these rules:
- Don’t make use of the site to do anything that is illegal, offensive, obscene, inflammatory or inappropriate. In other words, don’t do anything that will get you in trouble with either the police, other people, the rest of the world, the admins, or all of the above.
- Don’t make use of the site for any commercial purposes. This means you should not be advertising or promoting for anything or anyone. This includes saying things like “experienced h2 economics tutor at [phone number here]”. You are free, however, to make use of appropriate channels in the site to ask for help for things like a school project. Basically, nothing money-related please.
- Don’t be mean. Respect others and appreciate the power of collaborative learning. Flame wars, name-calling, harassment and other acts of bullying or intimidation are highly frowned upon.
- Don’t attempt to overload our servers, hack the site or hack into another person’s account. This means that you should not be trying to do anything with the site that we didn’t mean for it to do. We have people already trying to do that to test our security so you don’t have to.
User discretion and responsibility
You are responsible for your own learning!
Our team screens through everything to ensure that we deliver the most quality, accurate and reliable content to you, but no one’s perfect. While we try our best to ensure all materials provided by us are accurate and reliable, there may be instances where some information provided is misleading, offensive, or written in a way that misleads or offends you.
By using this site, you agree not to hold Owlcove or any or all of its administrators responsible for any misinformation, loss, damage to personal property, and/or any other form of disadvantaged situation that results from your usage of the site.
That said, we are always on the watch for offensive and misleading materials, and will remove them immediately upon detection should we deem that it is indeed inappropriate. If you see any such materials, tell us.
Content on the site
The site itself
We, the owlcove team, reserve all rights to site design, concepts, layout and code. You may not adapt any of the material here to create a similar portal or do anything that will compete in any way with owlcove.
All other content on the site is licensed under the CC-BY-SA-NC license. This includes all text, graphics, notes and articles. If you wish to use any of this content, like, say, quote something we said or use one of our images in your presentation, you can do so as long as it’s non-commerical and you tell everyone that it’s from us.
If you would like access to anything that we haven’t given our permission to for any reason, you can contact us here and we’ll talk about it. We’re quite willing to share, if it isn’t already obvious, so you don’t have to go about thinking of ways to steal our stuff.
User created content
The following terms apply when you are uploading content to the site and to content which you or others have already uploaded:
When you upload something to owlcove, you certify that you are:
- Sharing only materials that you have the right to share.
- Not infringing any laws and copyrights by sharing.
- Sharing them in accordance with the sharing guidelines.
All user-created content will be licensed under the CC-BY-NC-SA. When you upload something to owlcove, you agree to it being shared under this licence.
Ownership of materials
What is yours will be yours. Materials you share on owlcove still belong solely to you and owlcove claims no ownership over it. This means that you will still own any notes and articles that you share with us. If there’s any credit to be given, it’ll be given to you.
You, the creator, are ultimately responsible for any information, views, thoughts, inferences and opinions expressed within the materials. Do make it a point to ensure that there is nothing illegal, obscene, inflammatory or inaccurate in there. If the materials you upload happen to offend someone, that someone will be taking it out against you, not the site.
All opinions and ideas expressed on owlcove by individual users, including individual members of the team, are not representative at all on Owlcove's opinions and how the site feels, unless otherwise stated. Honest opinions, debates and discussions are encouraged, so it is possible that some opinions are very strongly expressed. If you disagree or are offended by anything, look for the original person who made these opinions, and have an intellectual chat with him or her.
Agreeing to let us work with your stuff
When you upload anything, you agree to let us:
- Screen through content you upload and make minor edits if needed. We will strive to preserve the integrity of your content. This means that we will do small things like correct spelling and language errors, but will not change it so much that you can’t recognise it anymore.
- Add a little discrete watermark at the bottom of your materials stating the CC licence, author, and that it is hosted on owlcove. This is so your work can be adequately recognised, protected, and people will know where to find them.
- Not publish it on the site if we believe that it will not be helpful to others.
Without notifying you prior to doing so, even when you retain ultimate ownership of the material.
Third party content
These terms apply to situations when the site displays, references or links to content hosted on websites other than owlcove.sg.
We are not responsible for things other people say or do
We don’t control everything, especially not third party content. By using the site you agree that we don’t control everything and that we are not responsible for any content hosted on any other site.
You agree not to hold us liable for any opinions, information and material you come across in a third party site and we don’t guarantee that we have checked these sites for accuracy, appropriateness, completeness or non-infringement of copyright.
If any material on owlcove infringes a copyright, our policy is to remove the material first while we ascertain the truth of the matter – whether or not an infringement is really being made. If we discover that it is indeed so, we will permanently remove it.
If any materials on owlcove seem to be infringing on a copyright that you own, notify us and we will do our utmost to do what’s right and remove the offending content. It'll also be great if you could help us by providing some evidence of infringement.
By using the site, you agree to trust and allow the owlcove team to take appropriate action to rectify disputes and copyright issues. If we can’t solve it, then we will assist you in getting help that can.
Mandatory disclaimers and legal protection
This part of the terms is when we state clearly how you should not be holding us responsible or blaming us for things we should not be blamed for. For these reasons we have kept it as elaborate as possible. They are still important and a refreshing change to the more informal tone adopted thus far, so, do read them too.

All other things you agree to, however, no longer need to apply unless you resume your use of the site.
One last thing...
We try our best to protect your privacy because we’re trying to help people. The last thing we want is for someone to be inconvenienced by what we’re doing. Here’s a summary of our policy:
- We don’t ask you for personal information unless we truly need it. In fact, we mostly take stuff that’s already on Facebook.
- Any additional information we collect will be things like the number of pages you visited, the number of notes you viewed, and other information that helps us make the site better.
- We don’t share this information with anyone unnecessarily except to comply with the law, develop the site, or protect our rights.
- We don’t sell, rent or use any information for commercial purposes either.
- We only store information we need for the running of the site and all its features on our servers.
- We comply with standards set by the Personal Data Protection Act (Singapore, No. 26 of 2012), though it may not apply to us.
In fact, we really don’t collect much of your information. Click here to see the list.
If you have questions about deleting or correcting your personal data, please contact our support team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Owlcove.sg (“Owlcove”) is a free platform operated by the administrators in the owlcove team. It is our policy to respect your privacy regarding any information we may collect while operating our website.
Collection of information
Like most websites, Owlcove collects non-personally-identifying information of the sort that web browsers and servers typically make available, such as the browser type, language preference, referring site, and the date and time of each visitor request. Our purpose in collecting non-personally identifying information is to better understand how Owlcove’s visitors use its website. From time to time, Owlcove may release non-personally-identifying information in the aggregate, e.g., by publishing a report on trends in the usage of its website.
Gathering of Personally-Identifying Information
Certain visitors to Owlcove.sg choose to interact with Owlcove in ways that require us to gather personally-identifying information. The amount and type of information that Owlcove gathers depends on the nature of the interaction. The majority of the personally-identifying information we collect is limited to details including name, e-mail address, school, and graduation year. This information is collected when the user chooses to log into the site as a registered user. Additional potentially personally-identifying information that we gather include subject choices, personal write-ups that the user chooses to provide, and actions a user takes on the site, including uploading and downloading of files, comments, recommending and browsing.
In each case, Owlcove collects such information only insofar as it is necessary or appropriate to fulfil the purpose of the visitor’s interaction with Owlcove. Owlcove does not disclose personally-identifying information other than as described below. And visitors can always refuse to supply personally-identifying information by not logging in, with the caveat that it may prevent them from engaging in certain website-related activities.
Owlcove may collect statistics about the behaviour of visitors to its websites. For instance, we may monitor the most popular notes or articles. Owlcove may display this information publicly or provide it to others, but in a way that is not personally identifying to individual visitors.
Protection of Certain Personally-Identifying Information
Owlcove will not rent, sell, or allow another to rent or sell potentially personally-identifying and personally-identifying information to anyone.
Administrators of Owlcove are granted access to the full database of user information insofar as they (i) need to know that information in order to process it on Owlcove’s behalf or to provide services available at Owlcove’s website, and (ii) that have agreed not to disclose it to others. Some of those administrators may be located outside of your home country; by using Owlcove’s websites, you consent to the transfer of such information to them.
Disclosure of information in special circumstances
Owlcove discloses potentially personally-identifying and personally-identifying information only in response to a subpoena, court order or other governmental request, or when Owlcove believes in good faith that disclosure is reasonably necessary to protect the property or rights of Owlcove, third parties or the public at large.
Information gathered from user-created content – Shares, Notes and Articles, Recommends, Comments, Questions and Thoughts.
Comments and recommends on the site are stored by facebook because we are using their plugin. Sharing of articles and notes will be stored in the databases of the respective sites you have shared them to. This does not mean that we are affiliated in any way to any of them.
Questions (posted on Discuss), Thoughts, Notes and articles you submit to us, along with information you provide about them, will be stored in our database, and we will treat them with the same policy as any other bits of personal information. However, the difference is that this content will be made publicly available because…well…when you submit notes or articles, it’s quite clear you want it to be made publicly available. For the record, when you submit notes or articles, you acknowledge that you permit us to make them and their related information publicly available, regardless of any personal information you choose to include in them.
Information use as part of the site's services
If you are a registered user of Owlcove, we may occasionally send you an email to tell you about new features, solicit your feedback, or just keep you up to date with what’s going on with Owlcove and our features. We primarily use our various product blogs to communicate this type of information, so we expect to keep this type of email to a minimum. If you send us a request (for example via a support email or via one of our feedback mechanisms), we reserve the right to publish it in order to help us clarify or respond to your request or to help us support other users. Owlcove takes all measures reasonably necessary to protect against the unauthorized access, use, alteration or destruction of potentially personally-identifying and personally-identifying information.
Personal Data Protection Act matters
The Personal Data Protection Act came into force in Singapore in 2014. The Act seeks to "govern the collection, use and disclosure of personal data by organisations in a manner that recognises both the right of individuals to protect their personal data and the need of organisations to collect, use or disclose personal data for purposes that a reasonable person would consider appropriate in the circumstances".
Because owlcove is based in Singapore, and because we care about your personal information, we seek to comply with the standards set by the Act, even though we're not entirely sure whether an informal project like owlcove is governed by it.
Hence, the owlcove admins are designated to upkeep compliance with the PDPA.
For owlcove's purposes, consent to collect personal information is deemed to have been given via the facebook authentication system when you signed in to owlcove. Should you wish to withdraw this consent, simply disable the app from your facebook account, and email us with a request to remove your information from the site.
Purposes of data collection
We collect very little data to begin with, and the only purpose is to facilitate your use of the site and to help us think of and implement improvements to the system. Specifically, we collect your name because this allows you to be identified when you comment on anything. We collect your email address so we can email you if there are important updates. We collect your school history so that if and when you upload materials others can find who it's from.
Access to data and disclosure
Only owlcove admins have access to personal data. We will not disclose such data unless requested by the proper authorities (eg. police). If you wish to discover or correct any of your personal data that we have collected and how it has been used, simply drop us an email at email@example.com, and we will provide you with what you want to know unless contrary to the situations set out in s 21(3) of the PDPA.
Protection and Retention of Data
We're committed to protecting your personal data. That's why we have security features coded in, and use a reliable hosting provider.
For as long as you do not remove the app from your facebook account, we will assume that you do intend to continue using owlcove, so we will keep your data. We take it that it is reasonable to assume that the purposes of collecting your data are no longer being served only when you de-authorise the app and inform us that you have done so.
If Owlcove, or substantially all of its assets, were acquired, user information would be one of the assets that is transferred or acquired by a third party. In the event that Owlcove stops operating, user information may be deleted or transferred to a third party. Owlcove will seek your permission before doing so, in the case of a transfer occurring on the site ceasing to operate. You acknowledge that such transfers may occur, and that any acquirer of Owlcove may continue to use your personal information as set forth in this policy.
Long live sharing!
